SM Expands ‘Green Recycling Machine’ Network to Boost Nationwide Recycling

 

From Bottle to Better Use: SM's Recycling Machines Now Cover 30 Malls Nationwide

MANILA, Philippines — That empty water bottle in your bag doesn't have to end up in a landfill. Feed it into the right machine at an SM mall, and it gets a second life as raw material for something new.

How It Works

Through the SM Green Movement, SM Cares has partnered with recycling tech company Sparklo to install SM Green Recycling Machines across 30 SM Supermalls nationwide. These are reverse vending machines — drop in an eligible plastic bottle, get a reward back — designed to make recycling a natural part of an ordinary mall trip rather than a separate errand.

Now Reaching Most of the Country

The rollout already spans Metro Manila, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Baguio, Pangasinan, La Union, Rizal, and Cebu — meaning shoppers in most of SM's major regional markets, not just the capital, now have a machine within reach.

A Habit, Not Just a Machine

One bottle at a time doesn't sound like much, but the program is banking on volume: thousands of small, repeated choices from families, students, and everyday shoppers adding up to a real dent in plastic waste over time. It's one part of the SM Cares Environmental Sustainability Program's Waste Management Pillar, which also includes the Trash to Cash Program and the Plastic Waste Collection Program — all pointed at the same long-term goal of a waste-free future.

With Sparklo's tech behind the machines and SM's mall footprint carrying it nationwide, recycling starts looking less like a chore and more like something people just do — one bottle at a time.
